Last week we touched on what the Cats lost this offseason; recap: mostly everything. Today, we look at what Matt McKillop brought in; preview: a lot! We have a lot to get through, so let's jump in with the Freshmen! Matt McKillop and the staff did a phenomenal job with high school recruiting, bringing in RJ Greer, Devin Brown, and Ian Platteeuw. All three players have been rated as high 3 stars by Verbal Commitss and bring plus levels of skill, size, and potential to the program.
RJ Greer
Greer is a 6'4 G/W out of Ohio and the son of Dayton Assistant Coach Ricardo Greer. Greer had a litany of Power Conference offers and was even committed to NC State before decommitting after Kevin Keatts was fired. On the court Greer was excellent and a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Ohio. Greer should remind Davidson fans of Kellan Grady, something he confirmed the staff focused on when recruiting him according to an article from 247. He is a bigger guard/wing who, while not a point guard, should provide playmaking and was a plus 3 point shooter and defender in high school.
Devin Brown
Another Ohio Cat, Brown is a 6'7 wing who garnered high praise as a recruit for his 3 point shooting and defense in high school. Luckily, the Cats got in on Brown early, which allowed all of us to watch gleefully as he rose rapidly his senior year in High School. In fact, he won a laundry list of player of the year awards in Ohio for 2024/25 and was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Ohio. Brown fits the mold of recent Davidson 3&D wings Michael Jones and Bobby Durkin to a T.
Ian Platteeuw
It wouldn't be Davidson without some international flavor. Platteeuw is a 7 footer from Spain who plays a game eerily similar to former Davidson Star Luka Brajkovic. He is a playmaking center who will wow you with his passing and low post scoring, is very adept on the boards, and grades out positively on defense even without blocking a ton of shots. Ian has also racked up a lot of experience playing professionally and in international competitions in his young career; in fact, he was named the FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2025 MVP this summer as he averaged 10/7/3.5 en route to Spain winning the tournament. The longterm hinge point will be his 3 point shooting. He has shown the potential for being a plus 3 point shooter even if he is not one just yet. Just as it was with Luka, developing a reliable 3-pointer could be the difference between him being a very good player and an A10 POY candidate.
Matt McKillop has excelled at High School Recruiting, even preceding his time as Head Coach, when he was the Associate Head Coach under Bob McKillop. The 2024/25 cycle was no different. Greer, Platteeuw, and Brown were all phenomenal pickups and should be able to provide offensive firepower without sacrificing much if anything on the defensive end. As always, it is incredibly hard for freshmen to break through at Davidson and provide major minutes right away, but I would not be surprised to see all three guys in the rotation as soon as next season and even one or two develop into all A10 guys before their time in the Red & Black is up. In the here and now, Platteeuw has the clearest path to minutes right away as he should form a platoon at center with JQ Roberts while Sean Logan works himself back into form coming off of an ACL tear.
