Michael Katsock came to Davidson as a preferred walk-on. He spent the first part of his high school career at DMV area Prep School St. Albans and spent a postgrad year in New England at St. Andrew’s. He had offers from Ivies and Patriot League schools but decided to forgo those options and pursue a path that former Wildcats such as Bates Jones have blazed in the past. Just as Bates Jones ultimately became a key role player for the Cats (and even later came off the bench for Duke as a Grad Transfer), there is the potential for Katsock to do the same.
The first thing that stands out about the 6’6 Sophomore Forward is his 3-point shooting stroke. Coupled with his size, it is pure, and it is deadly; in fact, he even led the Washington Post Metro area in 3-pointers made as a Junior. According to the Davidson Athletics page, he was also “voted to Washington’s DCSAA All-Star team and all-conference,” during his time at St. Albans as well. During his freshman year at Davidson he appeared in 6 games, largely in garbage time, but I think that he will see more time as he continues to develop at Davidson. In particular, his legitimate size and shooting prowess makes him a viable option as a stretch 4 if he adds strength. Additionally, if Davidson tries to play some 2-3 zone this season, as they have at times in the past (predominantly in the latter half of the 2017/18 season), Head Coach Matt McKillop could plug Katsock in on the backline of the zone in order to get his shooting in the game.
